Challenge

The City faced significant challenges in maintaining and optimizing its digital assets, including websites and mobile applications. Ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) while providing a seamless user experience (UX) for both the public and city personnel was paramount. Additionally, there was a need to improve the online presence across various departments, integrate diverse digital tools, and effectively analyze digital data for informed decision-making.

Results

As the lead on this initiative, I took a proactive, hands-on approach to project management and strategic vendor collaboration to address key challenges. I spearheaded the creation of an in-house style guide, bringing departments together to build a cohesive digital identity and ensure compliance. To address accessibility, I introduced digital tools and software, optimizing design workflows, communication processes, and overall efficiency.

I led the design and implementation of accessible, user-friendly web and mobile interfaces, driving increased user engagement and satisfaction. My efforts ensured full compliance with ADA and WCAG standards, making our digital assets inclusive for all. By deploying analytics tools like Google Analytics, I improved user data tracking and analysis, facilitating data-driven enhancements to our digital platforms.

Collaborating across departments, I unified our digital presence, significantly expanding outreach and efficiency. My strategic approach and collaboration delivered a successful digital transformation, addressing accessibility needs and elevating the user experience.

Processes

Research & Analysis: I conducted extensive user interviews, surveys, and analyzed in-app analytics to understand user pain points and needs. Additionally, I studied competitor apps and industry trends to gather valuable insights. This comprehensive research informed our strategy and ensured we were addressing the most critical issues.

Information Architecture: Based on the research findings, I restructured the web-app's navigation and content, prioritizing features and information according to user needs. This reorganization made the site more intuitive and user-friendly, enhancing overall accessibility and usability.

Wireframing & Prototyping: I designed low-fidelity wireframes to visualize the new layout and navigation, iteratively refining them based on user feedback. Afterward, I built a high-fidelity, interactive prototype to test the design. This iterative process ensured the final product was well-aligned with user expectations and needs.

Usability Testing: I conducted usability tests with a diverse group of users to validate the design and identify areas for improvement. Based on the feedback, I made necessary adjustments to the design, ensuring that it was both functional and accessible.

Visual Design & Style Guide: I developed a cohesive visual language, including color schemes, typography, and iconography, ensuring consistency throughout the app. Additionally, I created an in-house style guide for the City of Pomona to maintain design consistency in future updates. This guide established clear design and content standards, promoting a unified city brand across all digital platforms.

Project Management: I led multiple design projects and managed internal and external product developments. My hands-on approach and strategic collaboration with vendors were crucial in achieving our goals. By bringing together various departments, I fostered a collaborative environment that reinforced a cohesive city identity and ensured compliance with ADA and WCAG standards.
